At Drop the Racquet, we believe that your gear should work as hard as you do. Whether you’re smashing a serve at the local tennis courts or perfecting your dink in a heated pickleball match, your equipment is your primary connection to the ball. But here’s a secret most players miss: your racquet is only as good as its strings.
Many players walk into our South Burlington shop with high-end racquets but "dead" strings that are holding them back. Worse yet, some setups are actually causing avoidable injuries. Our owner, Tom Twitchell, is a Certified Racquet Technician and a proud member of the U.S. Racquet Stringers Association. He’s seen it all, from the "string-it-once-a-year" hobbyist to the competitive athlete using a setup that’s way too stiff for their arm.
Ready to level up your game? Let’s dive into the seven most common restringing mistakes and how we can help you fix them.
1. Waiting for the "Snap"
The most common mistake we see is players waiting for their strings to break before they come in for a refresh. Strings lose their elasticity and "playability" long before they actually snap. Think of it like the tires on your car, you don’t wait for a blowout to change them, do you?
When strings go "dead," they lose their ability to snap back, meaning you lose control, spin, and power. At Drop the Racquet, we recommend the "Rule of Three": if you play three times a week, you should restring at least three times a year. If you’re using polyester strings, you might need a refresh even sooner!
2. Falling into the "Poly Trap"

Polyester (poly) strings are incredibly popular because they’re what the pros use for massive spin. However, poly is stiff. If you aren’t breaking strings regularly or swinging with elite-level speed, a full bed of poly can feel like hitting with a board.
The Fix: If you want that poly-spin but need more comfort, Tom often suggests a hybrid setup. By mixing a durable polyester with a softer multifilament or synthetic gut, you get the best of both worlds: control and arm protection. Check out our services page to see the stringing options we offer.
3. The "Higher Tension = More Power" Myth
It sounds logical, right? Tight strings should act like a trampoline? Actually, it’s the opposite. Higher tension provides more control, while lower tension provides more power.
If your tension is too high for your strength level, you’ll find yourself swinging harder just to get the ball deep, which is a fast track to tennis elbow. Tom works individually with every customer to find that "sweet spot" tension that matches your racquet's specs and your personal playing style.
4. Ignoring Your Racquet’s Health (Grommets and Frames)
A professional restringing job isn't just about the string; it’s about the whole racquet. Over time, the plastic "grommets" (the tubes the strings pass through) can crack or wear down. If a string touches the raw frame, it will snap prematurely.
When you bring your gear into our retail shop, Tom performs a full inspection. We don't just pull strings; we ensure your grommets are intact and your frame is structurally sound, ensuring your investment lasts as long as possible.
5. Copying the Pros Blindly

We all love watching the legends, but playing with the exact setup of a top-tier pro is rarely the right move for a club player. Professional players have customized, heavy frames and restring their racquets after every single session. Their tension settings are dialed in for their specific (and often extreme) swing speeds.
Instead of copying a pro, let's build a setup that fits you. We carry the newest models from Wilson, Head, Babolat, and Prince, and we can help you select a string tension that complements your specific frame. Not sure what feels right? We have demo racquets available so you can try before you buy!
6. Using the Wrong String for Your Style
Are you a flat hitter who loves to come to the net? Or a baseline warrior who lives for topspin? Using a thin, soft string if you’re a heavy hitter will lead to constant breakage. Conversely, using a thick, dead string if you’re a finesse player will ruin your "touch" shots.
At Drop the Racquet, we take the time to ask about your game. We offer a wide selection of colors and gauges, allowing you to personalize your gear to your personality and your performance needs.
7. The "Mystery" Stringing Job
Not all stringing is created equal. A DIY job or a "friend of a friend" might save a few bucks, but inconsistent tension and improper tie-offs can lead to "hot spots" on your stringbed where the ball flies off unpredictably.
Choosing a Certified Racquet Technician like Tom ensures that every string is pulled to the exact poundage you requested. We use professional-grade electronic machines to guarantee precision every single time. Want to see the process in action?
